Whaley’s Closed After 75 Years in Tampa
Posted August 11th, 2008 by SheilaI was very disappointed to read that Whaley’s Market in Hyde Park closed this past Sunday. It was one of the
few landmarks left in Hyde Park that was stable. Nothing seems to last long in Hyde Park, but Whaley’s was an exception. Hyde Park fell victim to the condo market when a landowner was able to sell their little piece of land to a developer with deep pockets. Of course, all of that has changed and the quaint neighborhood is almost completely disappeared. Stores, restaurants and bars do not last. My favorite bars like the Dubliner and Mangroves are still hanging in there. I remember when the Hyde Park shopping district was full of cool stores and restaurants. I used to enjoy walking around outside and shopping, but now there just isn’t much there of interest. The only reason I go to Hyde Park now is work out and to go to only cool place Hyde Park has going for it – Anthropologie. They just redid a large part of the shopping district, but still do not have any tenants. What happened to Tommy Bahama’s Restaurant? After the fruit and vegetable stand closed on the corner of Howard and Swan, Whaley’s was all that was left. Many people of lots of great memories of the family-run grocery store and I know it will be greatly missed.
