Hurricane Shelters for your Pets
Posted August 18th, 2008 by SheilaHurricane season was very quiet last year and has been very quiet this year until now. Like everyone I am
hoping and praying Hurricane Fay will either die down to a tropical storm or remain a category one. I live in the South Tampa area, which is surrounded by water, so I always get nervous when a hurricane rolls through. I have two dachsunds and a cat that I would never leave behind. I just wouldn’t be able to live with myself and know it absolutely killed the people who have been forced to leave their pets behind. The best thing you can do to prepare for a hurricane is to have your pet micro-chipped. Micro-chipping is pretty common place now so if your dog is found, a person should know to take them to the closest vet or animal shelter to have them scanned.
A shelter should be a last resort, but in the event you are forced into it, here is a list of designated schools that will take your animals:
Hillsborough County - Burnett Middle School adn Sickles High
Pinellas County - Highland Middle School in Dunedin, Oak Grove Middle School in Clearwater, Thurgood Marshall Middle School in St. Petersburg
Polk County - Lime Street Elementary in Lakeland, Lake Region High School in Eagle Lake, Alta Vista Elementary in Haines City
Pasco County - Pine View Middle School in Land O’ Lakes
